Information Note: Winterising the pools / Outdoor pools
- Clean all the leaves and debris from the pool surface
- Allow pool to drain to about 150mm below the skimmers.
- Ensure the skimmer pipework is thoroughly drained of water.
- Add a strong algicide to the water.
- Raise chlorine levels to about 8-10mg/l
- Ensure pH is about 7.4
- Float some buoyant materials on the pool surface (timber, footballs, empty chemical containers etc.). This should absorb ice pressure should any be formed.
- Allow chlorine levels to drop to 0.5mg/l and maintain that level throughout the winter.
- Remove pool ladders, equipment, skimmer weirs and baskets.
- Fit the pool cover as tightly as possible. If the pool cover is not substantial enough to prevent access consideration should be given to replacing it with a worthwhile model.
- Backwash the pool filters and ensure the filters are clean.
- Close all valves below the water line and open all those above the water line.
- Store pool chemicals in a cool dry dark well ventilated room that is secure. ensure that the chemical labelling on the outside of the room complies with the chemicals on the inside.
